Shanghai Railway Station Transfers
Shanghai is served by four major railway stations, and high-speed rail is the fastest way to reach Suzhou, Hangzhou, Nanjing and beyond. After a long train journey, a private car waiting at the exit with a name sign beats queuing for a taxi — especially with luggage or family. We meet you at any Shanghai station and drive you directly to your hotel, the airport or your next city.
- Shanghai Railway Station (central): In Jing'an District, 10-15 minutes from the Bund and People's Square by car. Interchange of Metro Lines 1, 3 and 4; the metro concourse connects to the station hall by tunnel.
- Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station: The largest high-speed railway station in Asia (opened 2010) and the terminus of the Beijing-Shanghai, Shanghai-Nanjing, Shanghai-Hangzhou and Shanghai-Kunming high-speed lines. It sits 15 km west of downtown, served by Metro Lines 2, 10 and 17.
- Airport & rail connection: Hongqiao Railway Station is part of the Hongqiao Comprehensive Transport Hub — Terminal 2 of Hongqiao Airport (SHA) is a short 800 m walk away, covered by indoor walkway. If your flight and high-speed train connect, you can transfer between them without stepping outside.
- Hongqiao Railway Station to Pudong Airport: About 58-60 km, roughly 1 hour by car depending on traffic. The metro alternative (Line 2 to Longyang Road, then Line 16) takes about 1.5 hours with luggage — most connecting guests prefer our door-to-door car, confirmed within 2 hours of booking.
- Arrival tip: Electronic tickets are used on almost all high-speed routes — no paper pickup needed. Allow at least 45 minutes before departure to clear security in the large main hall. Food and drink options are available on Level 2 and B1.
Other Locations We Serve
Best Time to Visit Shanghai
Spring (March-May): Mild temperatures (15-22°C), blooming cherry blossoms at Gucun Park, and pleasant walking weather. Shanghai's most comfortable season.
Autumn (October-November): Clear skies, golden ginkgo trees, and the Shanghai International Arts Festival. Ideal for outdoor exploration and water town day trips.
Summer (June-August): Hot and humid (28-35°C), with plum rain season in June-July. Indoor attractions like Shanghai Tower and museums are great escapes.
Winter (December-February): Cool (3-10°C) but rarely freezing. Festive Christmas and New Year decorations along the Bund. Lowest hotel prices.
Private car tip: Avoid the July-August heat for water town trips. Spring and autumn offer the best weather for exploring Zhujiajiao and Suzhou.
What to Eat in Shanghai
Xiaolongbao (Soup Dumplings): Shanghai's signature dish. Try Din Tai Fung (consistent quality) or local favorite Jia Jia Tang Bao in Huangpu. Careful — they're hot inside!
Shengjianbao (Pan-Fried Pork Buns): Crispy bottom, juicy filling, sesame seeds on top. Best from street stalls — Yang's Dumpling is a popular chain.
Shanghai Hairy Crab (Da Zha Xie): Seasonal delicacy (October-November). Steamed crabs from Yangcheng Lake, served with ginger vinegar. A must-try in autumn.
Red-Braised Pork (Hong Shao Rou): Slow-cooked pork belly in sweet soy sauce. Tender, fatty, and addictive. Try at a local Shanghainese restaurant.
Scallion Oil Noodles (Cong You Ban Mian): Simple but perfect. Springy noodles with fragrant scallion oil and soy sauce. A Shanghai breakfast staple.
Private car tip: Your driver can take you to the best local eateries near each attraction. Ask for "where locals eat" — they'll skip the tourist traps.
Shanghai Travel Tips
Use the metro for central Shanghai: Shanghai's metro is extensive and cheap (¥3-10). But for airport transfers, water town trips, and multi-stop days, a private car is far more comfortable.
Book Shanghai Tower in advance: The observation deck is popular. Book online to skip the ticket line. Go 30 minutes before sunset for day and night views.
The Bund at night: The best time is 7-9 PM when all buildings are lit. Go early to get a good spot for photos.
Tap water is not drinkable: Drink bottled or filtered water. Most hotels provide electric kettles for boiling water.
Download these apps: WeChat (payment + metro card), Alipay, Metro Man (subway navigation), and Apple Pay/Google Pay (works at many places).
Tipping is not expected: Unlike Western countries, tipping is not customary in China. But a small tip for excellent service is always appreciated.
Nearby Destinations from Shanghai
Suzhou (100km, 1.5 hours): The "Venice of the East" with classical gardens (Humble Administrator's Garden, Lingering Garden), silk factories, and Pingjiang Road. Perfect day trip.
Hangzhou (180km, 2.5 hours): West Lake, Longjing tea plantations, and Lingyin Temple. A 2-day trip allows time for a boat ride and tea village visit.
Zhujiajiao Water Town (50km, 1 hour): Shanghai's closest water town. Ancient stone bridges, canal boat rides, and traditional snacks. Great half-day trip.
Wuzhen (130km, 2 hours): A beautifully restored water town with both day and night areas. Stay overnight for the magical evening lanterns.
Nanjing (300km, 3 hours): Former capital with the Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum, Confucius Temple, and Presidential Palace. Rich in history and culture.
Huangshan (460km, 5 hours): Yellow Mountain, one of China's most scenic areas. Best as a 2-3 day trip with an overnight on the mountain.
All reachable by private car. Request a custom multi-city itinerary and we'll design the perfect route.
A Classic Day in Central Shanghai
First-time visitors can cover Shanghai's greatest hits in one well-ordered day. The sights are close together, but parking and traffic make a private charter far smoother than taxi-hopping — your driver waits at each stop while you explore.
- Morning — Shanghai Museum (People's Square): One of China's best free museums, famed for its bronzes, ceramics, jade and Ming furniture. Allow 1.5-2 hours; book a free timed ticket in advance online. People's Square is the transport hub where East Nanjing Road begins.
- Lunch & early afternoon — Yu Garden & City God Temple: The 400-year-old Ming garden sits beside the old-town bazaar and Chenghuangmiao Temple, packed with snack stalls — try xiaolongbao and shengjianbao for lunch. Allow 1.5-2 hours for the garden, bazaar and temple.
- Late afternoon — Shanghai Tower observation deck: Head across the river to Lujiazui and ride to the 118th-floor observatory (360° city views). Arrive around 4 pm to catch daylight, sunset and the evening lights in one visit.
- Evening — The Bund: Finish with a waterfront walk along the 52 historic colonial buildings facing the Pudong skyline. The lights switch on after dark — the 7-9 pm window is the classic photo time. It's free and best enjoyed on foot.
Shopping & Nightlife Districts
Shanghai's shopping areas each have a distinct character. A half-day charter lets you hit two or three without hauling bags on the metro:
- Nanjing Road: China's busiest shopping street, about 5.6 km long, running west from People's Square. East Nanjing Road is the famous pedestrian mall leading to the Bund — department stores, neon signs and street food. West Nanjing Road (Jing'an direction) is the high-end fashion strip with international brands and upscale malls.
- Xintiandi: A restored shikumen (stone-gate lane-house) district in the former French Concession. Grey-brick exteriors hold modern restaurants, wine bars and cafés — the city's favorite dinner-and-nightlife area, split into a quieter North Block and a livelier South Block. Walking distance from People's Square.
- Yatai Xinyang Market: An underground market cluster near the Science & Technology Museum metro station (Line 2 in Pudong), dense with souvenir stalls, apparel, watches and tailoring workrooms — popular for gifts and bargaining. Quality varies, so compare prices and negotiate; bring cash. For wholesale-style fashion shopping, Qipu Road in Hongkou is the classic old-city clothing market.
- Private car tip: A shopping charter avoids carrying bags between stops, and our driver can wait while you browse Nanjing Road, lunch at Xintiandi and finish at the market. Fixed city-charter rates from $115 — final price confirmed within 2 hours.
